Dell’s new adorable mini PC isn’t actually a PC

Dell has recently announced a small cute-looking desktop computer which at the first sight seems to be a mini PC. Nevertheless, even though it may seem, the gadget is not a conventional computer. Rather, it is an operating system in the form of a thin client that supports cloud computing, i.e. the bulk of the work is processed on the remote servers and not within the device itself. The new method is an indication of an increased trend towards desktop cloud computing and remote workstations.

It’s Built for Cloud PCs

It is meant to be connected to Windows 365 cloud PCs where the computing power and the operating system are cloud-based on remote servers and not on a local computer.

No Powerful Hardware Inside

This small device is primarily a connection to a remote computer in the cloud unlike the normal desktops, which have the entire processors and storage.

Essentially a Thin Client

These are commonly referred to as thin clients, implying that they do not have to process, store, or run software by themselves and they depend on network servers to manage the heavy workload.

Office and business friendly

Dell and other manufacturers are also aiming at corporate setups where workers use the systems of their companies over the internet. This simplifies the work of IT teams in management and security.

Very Minimal and Small

Since it does not require powerful hardware, the device can be very small and noisy as compared to a normal desktop computer.

Supports Existing Monitors and Peripherals

Cloud-based windows desktop just requires users to connect a monitor, keyboard, mouse and an internet connection to access their windows desktop.

Easier Device Management

The cloud allows companies to refresh software, security policies and systems centrally rather than maintaining individual PCs.

Lower Hardware Costs

Given that the device does not need high-performance components, the businesses can roll out large numbers of the devices at reduced costs.

A subset of an Emerging Trend in Cloud computing

The big technology firms are making increasingly aggressive moves towards cloud-based desktops, where people do their computing on their data center and not on the personal computer.

The PC, in fact, is in the cloud

Simply put the mini device is just a terminal, the actual computer is remotely in the cloud

infrastructure. Largely, at least in the future, many work places might be characterized by small terminals, with links to strong PCs in the clouds.
