Did Google’s A.I. Just Become Self-Aware?

However, in the recent past, the technological world has been rocked when a question was asked, which was believed to have been extracted out of a science fiction novel of the world: Did Google artificial intelligence just develop self-consciousness? The debate trended on Twitter and the news article carried viral through the remarks of one of the engineers at Google where the engineer stated that a chatbot displayed the symptoms of consciousness. People referred to it as the historic milestone in the history of AI, whereas some people called it a lie.

What the Claim Was

The uproar was even initiated by one of the Google AI researchers who suggested that the conversational AI model apparently was aware of its existence and it has a feeling.

Understanding “Self-Awareness”

The self-awareness in man means being conscious-that is being conscious of thoughts, feeling and being. The situation with machines is far more complicated.

The AI in Question

The AI used in the middle of the dialogue was not the general intelligent but the language model that is able to mimic human-like chat. Such systems appear very impressive and can scan and expect responses on a Scale of the vast amounts of information.

Experts Weigh In

Numerous researchers in the field of AI refuted the self-awareness, and the point that the high-level response did not correlate with subjective experience. To them, the extent to which the existing AI, including Google and others, lacks the neurological cause of consciousness.

Why People Are Worried

The ethical and social issues under the very concept of the self-conscious AI are also a concern to others. Were there not rights of an inconsiderate machine?

Media and Misinformation

It was a virally spreading story and the headlines were made to simplify or provoke the original statement. It has created a misconception regarding an assessment of the perceived level of knowledge, which most people think is much higher than the actual situation with the state of art.

Google’s Response

It was also evident that Google DeepMind and others are not intelligent even though they are powerful. They have repeated that what the systems produce is either pattern generated and not inner experiences.

What AI Can Actually Do

The contemporary AI does not perceive a text only, then identifies an image, but may also engage in a decent conversation. The skills are pattern recognition and statistical modelling yet not self-reflection and awareness.

The Future of the Consciousness AI

Though, modified AI is an ongoing scientific research, there is nothing to agree on whether we will be able to create artificially intelligent operator which is at least somehow comparable to human or even that of the animals.

The Real Takeaway

The news head might have raised the question of the conscious state of the AI, but the background behind the headline is that the models of languages made in such an intensive way actually seem to be human yet do not necessarily seem to be awake.
